MAGNA CARTA PARK, RUNNYMEDE
Magna Carta Park is a comprehensive redevelopment of a site previously occupied by part of Holloway College on the ridge above the Thameside water meadows at Runnymede. The master plan was developed by John Thomson and Partners and includes several elements: the refurbishment of the original Victorian house as an assited living establishment; a group of student apartments and associated facilities; a section of social housing; and an estate of over fifty private dwellings providing a variety of houses and apartments. Large areas of the original open parkland with its many mature trees available to all the residents.
The private housing was designed by Julian Bicknell and Associates for Art Estates with various house types and apartment blocks. Some of the houses are freestanding; some are semi-detached; some are arranged as terraces. The apartment buildings are designed to complement the houses in scale and style. Together they enclose a community of compact streets and squares.
All the buildings use a vernacular vocabulary of materials: brick, stucco, artificial stone, slate, tile, painted joinery and iron-work. The designs vary from building to building with different colours of brickwork, different window treatments, different porches and other details - providing a pleasing variety and individuality, while retaining an overall consistency and formality of the layout in both plan and elevation.
