MONK'S LANTERN, ST GEORGE'S HILL, SURREY

A large new house, now called Corwen Manor, on the St George’s Hill Estate occupying a steeply sloping site that allows the basement swimming pool to emerge into a sunken garden.  The house is of brick and stone with a slate roof and white painted timberwork brick and stone.

The main part of the house is formal and symmetric with a columned centrepiece on the entrance a projecting bay on the garden side.   This part houses the double height entry hall, the main staircase and the formal reception and bedroom.  The informal wing to the SW contains a large open plan family room, kitchen and garages at ground floor, highly individual children’s' rooms above and a games/cinema room, gym and swimming pool below.

There is a separate three-car garage with staff accommodation above and a garden pavilion that is available as a guest annexe.

Julian Bicknell & Associates is a London based architectural practice of thirty years standing, specialising in quality buildings, interiors and landscapes - mainly in classical or traditional style. The practice has worked for private clients and developers all over the UK and in Japan, Russia, the USA, Morocco, Germany and Kazakhstan. The work includes spacious country houses, luxury homes on the prestige estates at Wentworth and St. Georges Hill, museums, restaurants, theatres, schools, a golf club and modifications to important historic buildings. The design philosophy combines a deep sympathy for traditional design and building methods, with a full understanding of energy strategies and construction management. The practice works closely with other professionals and experienced craftsmen to achieve low-energy buildings of real quality within predetermined budgets.
